The Rt. Hon. Damian Green MP presented local school children with prizes for the Litter Angels anti-litter poster competition on Friday at Willesborough Junior School.
Litter Angels is a charity set up in 2008 by Gordon Henderson, MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, to create, through education, awareness about the anti-social nature of litter and its effect on our local environment.
The theme of this year’s competition was how litter harms the seaside and 6 local primary schools took part.
Mr Green presented a Litter Angels certificate to all the children who were shortlisted and then presented the winner from each school with a goodie bag containing a personalised mug and a copy of the Litter Angels storybook.
The overall winning poster was designed by Nina Llermette, who attends Mersham Primary School. Nina received a cheque for £50 and her school received a cheque for £100. The winning poster will now be printed on a metal sign that will be displayed in the car parks of the McDonald’s restaurants in Ashford.
Mr Green said: ‘This was the first year I decided to encourage my local primary schools to take part in the Litter Angels competition and am pleased that it has been a success. ‘Litter is an important issue around Ashford and the competition has made the children think about how litter can have a negative effect at the seaside. They were all very excited at the presentation. I would like to thank all those involved with the competition, particularly, McDonalds for their sponsorship.”
