Curb the blockages on the M20

We need the M20 to run smoothly not only for freight and tourist traffic but also to ensure that our local roads are kept clear of traffic that ought to be on the motorway. So I want to see Operation Brock used only in real emergencies.

Let’s be clear that closing one lane of the motorway, which Brock involves, is a lot better than the old Operation Stack, which closed the whole motorway around Ashford and caused untold misery. Years of campaigning against Stack was very worthwhile.

But there is more to do. I am involved in talks with Government Ministers to find a long-term national solution for the M20 and the ports. I want lorries heading for the coast when there is a problem to be held outside Kent, in service stations on the motorway network. Technology makes this possible as long as we have strict enforcement.

This is a key area not just for the local economy but for the quality of life of everyone around Ashford.
